The Sacred Diary

William Gearing (c.1625-c.1690)

William Gearing's book provides helpful directions on how the believer may walk with God and enjoy fellowship with Him throughout the course of every day.  He aims to encourage readers to use every opportunity for thinking about the Lord, pondering upon the truth of His Word, and turning our hearts to eternal realities.  For this purpose, the book is divided into 42 short sections, including:

  • How to Begin the Day With God

  • At the Springing of the Day, or the Rising of the Sun

  • Whilst Thou Art Yet Lying in Thy Bed

  • When Thou Art Putting On Thy Clothes

  • Of Our Dedicating the Morning to God

  • Rules About Eating and Drinking

  • Of Recreations and How to Use Them

  • Of Holy Watchfulness Against Temptations

  • Of Providing in the Evening for the Day to Come

  • When You Compose Yourself to Sleep

There is also a helpful appendix providing directions on how one may best sanctify the Lord's Day.

Our newest series of books focuses on a range of subjects relating to Christian experience, heart religion and practical godliness.

Written by many lesser-known Puritan, Scottish and American authors, these books seek to deal faithfully with the reader’s soul across a wide range of issues in the Christian life. Currently, there are 3 titles in the series with more to follow (DV):

The Duties of Secret Religion

David Sturrock (c.1808-c.1853)

In this book, Rev. David Sturrock provides an overview of the various aspects of private devotion, or what he calls 'Secret Religion'.  He explains what each duty involves, how it ought to be conducted, and how each aspect can be a tremendous benefit to those who perform them seriously.  Using illustrations  and quotes garnered from the lives of various Christians in church history, he covers:

  • Searching the Scriptures

  • Spiritual Meditation

  • Self-Examination

  • Personal Covenanting

  • Secret and Ejaculatory Prayer

To our knowledge, this is the first time that the book has been republished since it was originally printed in 1850.

The Afflicted Man's Companion

John Willison (1680-1750)

Though written chiefly for the sick and dying, Rev. John Willison's book contains much helpful counsel for Christians who are undergoing all kinds of sharp afflictions.  This book contains advice not only for sufferers, but also for those caring for them, and for unbelievers who may be watching on in good health.  Topic include:

  • Directions to families and individuals visited with sickness.

  • How to deal with long seasons of sharp illness or affliction.

  • Directions to sick and dying unbelievers.

  • Responding to recovery from illness

  • Advice to those who are in health.

  • The dying sayings of well-known Christians

Above all, Rev. Willison encourages his readers to look to the Lord Jesus Christ  in the midst of all their sufferings.  He is the One who has wisely ordained their illness, He is the One who will do good for them in their illness, and He is the One whom they will finally see when their final illness draws to an end.

This book was once highly treasured by the Lord's people in Scotland, and has undergone numerous re-printings since it was first published in 1727.
