Instrumental Music in the Public Worship of the Church

John Girardeau (1825-1898)

The use of musical instruments in public worship is a practice that is widely accepted in most churches today. But it has not always been so. Indeed, for many centuries almost all Protestant worship services were conducted without any musical accompaniment whatsoever. In this book, John Girardeau explains the Biblical reasons for this position, examines the historical evidence of their absence from public worship, and answers some common arguments for their use.

John Girardeau (1825-1898) was a 19th century Presbyterian minister and professor of systematic theology at Columbia Seminary in South Carolina. Known for his caring ministry to slaves in the southern United States, he also took strong stances against the intrusion of evolutionary theories and instrumental music into the life of the church.
