The Commercialization of Scripture
Recently, I finished reading a book called The Dorean Principle by Conley Owens. In this book, the author discusses the commercialization of Christianity throughout much of the Western world, and the impact that this has had upon the spread of the gospel.
Almost everywhere we turn, we see Christians demanding money in exchange for their particular ministry of God's Word. Christian authors sell the teaching of God's Word for a price. Bible publishers copyright their particular translation of Scripture and place strict conditions on its use. Churches pay hundreds of dollars in licence fees every year to sing the latest worship songs. Christian counsellors charge fees to minister God's Word to those who are hurting. Conference organisers sell high-priced tickets to those who want to hear famous ministers preach the Scriptures. Some Christian websites lock up their content behind a paywall. And so the list goes on....
The Question of Support
Now, without doubt, all of these various forms of ministry require money to operate. There are legitimate costs to be borne and bills to be paid. And part of those costs will often involve the financial support of those who work hard at teaching and preaching God's Word. Indeed, it is a Biblical principle that one should "not muzzle the ox while it is threshing" (1 Tim. 5:18), and that "the labourer is worthy of his wages," (Luke 10:7).
But where should his "wages" come from? Should they come from those whom he ministers to - as a kind of payment for services rendered or goods received? Is it legitimate for an author, songwriter, publisher, counsellor or speaker to turn Scriptural truth into a commodity that can be exchanged for money?
Indeed, how are we to reconcile such practices with Jesus' own words to His disciples? He declared that they were not to charge for their ministry at all: "Freely you have received, freely give" (Matt. 10:8). Similarly, the Apostle Paul declared that he would not "peddle the Word of God," like so many others were doing (2 Cor. 2:17).
The Dorean Principle
The Biblical solution, according to the author of The Dorean Principle, is that those who minister God's Word should do so freely - without ever charging for it - while receiving their support through the free-will gifts of fellow believers. In this way, fellow Christians serve as co-labourers with him in that ministry, enabling him to freely give God's Word to others, while still receiving the financial support that he needs. Or to put it another way: The ministry of God's Word should be supported, not sold.
Free PDF Titles
It is this Biblical principle which governs our decision at Cadarga Press to freely provide all of our titles as downloadable PDF files. Simply go to the individual webpage of the title that you are interested in, and click on the "Free Ebook" link near the bottom of the listing. The ebook will be yours to enjoy - without any need to give your email address, name or any other personal details whatsoever.
In fact, feel free to use the PDF files however you please. There are no restrictions on their use, and the entire contents of all the books are in the public domain. Print out and share as many pages as you desire. Send the ebooks to others. Use the files to create your own print-on-demand paperback of the book.
